Buddhist monk lays down hip hop beats to spread holy message

Tokyo (RTV) -- A practitioner of an ancient religion is using a modern art to spread his message.

Kansho Tagai is a Buddhist monk, offering prayers throughout the day at the 400-year-old temple he leads in Tokyo. But he also goes by another name: MC Happiness.

Sometimes Tagai hits the stage, laying down Buddhist prayers to hip hop beats.

He says he got the idea because he enjoyed hip hop in English, even though he couldn't understand a word of it.

He realized that many people in Japan don't understand Buddhist prayers either, but he thought people could enjoy them when they were melded with hip hop.

By adding the new twist, Tagai hopes to attract more young people to Buddhism.
